Federal Way's downtown and a Renton–Tukwila job center are among Washington's 99 OZ 2.0 nominations

Two more South King County cities have said where their Opportunity Zone 2.0 nominations are. The Renton Reporter reported on October 20, 2026 that Federal Way's nominated area covers its downtown core, including the Federal Way Downtown light rail station and the regional bus transit center, and that a nominated area stretching into southwest Renton was put forward with the City of Tukwila and includes the Alaska Airlines and Sounders FC headquarters. Kent has five nominated areas, as the city said on October 12. All are part of the 99 nominations Gov. Bob Ferguson submitted to the U.S. Treasury on October 8. Treasury has not certified them yet; certified zones take effect January 1, 2027.

Federal Way. According to the Renton Reporter (October 20, 2026), Federal Way's nominated Opportunity Zone covers the city's downtown core: underutilized commercial properties, the Federal Way Downtown light rail station, the regional bus transit center, Town Square Park and high-density zoning that can support mid-rise housing. Mayor Jim Ferrell told the paper that the nomination “positions us to attract investment, support local businesses, and encourage continued growth in downtown and throughout our community.”

Renton and Tukwila. The same report says the nominated area that stretches into southwest Renton was put forward in partnership with the City of Tukwila and includes the Alaska Airlines and Sounders FC headquarters. The report describes it as an employment center with the potential for more than 25,000 more jobs and 5,000 housing units. Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone said the nomination “reinforces that the greater South King County area is an increasingly attractive destination for business growth and long‑term investment.”

Kent. Kent has five nominated areas, as the city said on October 12 and we reported: West Hill near the new light rail station, the Kent Valley industrial area, East Hill, and two areas around downtown and Central Avenue.

The statewide slate. Gov. Bob Ferguson submitted 99 nominations to Treasury, across 27 counties and 17 tribal lands, selected from 152 applications. King County holds 25 of the 99 by our count of the Commerce nomination list. The city reports do not give tract numbers, so we have not matched these areas to individual tracts here; the full list is on our Washington zone page and in the King County tract list.

Other filed slates. Washington is one of the states whose nominations are in with Treasury. Georgia published 235 nominated tracts across 90 counties, three under its cap of 238. New Jersey is using the 30-day extension and says it will submit by October 28. See every state on the OZ 2.0 nomination tracker and Washington’s full status on the Washington zone page.

What happens next. These are nominations, not certified Opportunity Zones. Under Rev. Proc. 2026-14, Treasury's review window ends by November 27, 2026 at the latest (how certification works). As of October 21, 2026, Treasury has not published a certified OZ 2.0 list for Washington or any other state. Certified zones take effect January 1, 2027.
