How we correct
- We check the report against the primary source (the IRS, Treasury, a governor's or state agency's release, the Census Bureau or a filing) and reply to the sender.
- A confirmed error is fixed on the same URL. We do not publish a replacement story under a new address.
- A material correction adds a dated correction note at the bottom of the story saying what changed. The story's "Updated" time then shows when the correction went in; the "Published" time never changes.
- Typos and formatting fixes that do not change a fact are made without a note.
- When a story was a fair reading of the facts at the time and later facts changed, we add a dated update rather than rewrite what was reported.
