Rhode Island Commerce says the state nominated 25 census tracts to Treasury on Oct 28, 2026, the most it can of its 55 eligible tracts. Providence County has 21. Treasury has not yet published its OZ 2.0 list.
Rhode Island has nominated 25 census tracts for Opportunity Zone 2.0, the next round of opportunity zones, which starts January 1, 2027. Rhode Island Commerce’s Opportunity Zones page says the state nominated the 25 tracts to the U.S. Department of the Treasury on October 28, 2026, and it now lists all 25 by city and tract number.
25 is the most Rhode Island can pick. Treasury’s September 2026 eligibility data lists 55 eligible Rhode Island tracts, and under IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-14 a state with fewer than 100 eligible tracts may nominate up to 25. All 25 tracts on the state’s list are on Treasury’s eligible list.
Where the tracts are. Providence County has 21 of the 25. By city, Providence has 7, Pawtucket and Woonsocket have 4 each, Central Falls has 3, and Cranston has 2, with 1 in East Providence. Newport has 2 (Newport County), Warwick has 1 (Kent County) and Narragansett has 1 (Washington County). The Narragansett tract is the only one of the 25 that Treasury’s data marks as rural. Bristol County has no nominated tracts.
How the tracts were picked. Commerce says it gathered input from cities and towns and community stakeholders, and it judged tracts on investment attractiveness and market readiness, community need, and fit with state and local policy goals.
Nominated, awaiting Treasury. Commerce says Treasury still has to review the list before it is final. Treasury, the IRS and the CDFI Fund have not yet published any final OZ 2.0 list, so OZI lists these tracts as nominated until Treasury does. Nominated tracts would take effect January 1, 2027, only if Treasury finalizes them, and would run through December 31, 2036. Rhode Island’s filing brings our tracker to 23 filings, from 22 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Nationwide, Treasury’s September 2026 data counts 25,461 eligible tracts.
