Eligible: 33 tracts, 21 rural (eligible), per Treasury's September 2026 eligibility data; nomination cap: 25 (states with fewer than 100 eligible tracts may nominate 25, or all if fewer than 25). The original IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-14 appendix listed 32 Alaska tracts (21 rural); Treasury later added 1. Selection process background

Alaska OZ 2.0 Selection Process

The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) led Alaska's OZ 2.0 selection. According to DCCED's October 14 press release (byline Alexandra Vrabec, public information officer), the state scored 32 federally eligible census tracts on a 100-point framework built on community impact, market viability and policy alignment, and recommendations were reviewed by a state subcabinet, the governor's Cabinet and the Governor's Office before Gov. Mike Dunleavy submitted 25 nominations, the most Alaska could nominate. A DCCED budget overview on the state's public-notice site says 21 of the 32 eligible tracts are rural.

Process timeline:

  • Fall 2025: DCCED outreach to communities, regional economic development organizations and industry groups (per the release).
  • April 1–30, 2026: Written public comment period, with a presentation and oral comment session on April 14 (state public notice).
  • October 14, 2026: DCCED announces the governor has submitted 25 nominations.

The release lists the census areas and boroughs with selected tracts: Aleutians West, Anchorage, Bethel, Fairbanks North Star, Kodiak Island, Kusilvak, Lake and Peninsula, Matanuska-Susitna, Nome, Northwest Arctic, Prince of Wales-Hyder, Southeast Fairbanks, Wrangell and Yukon-Koyukuk. As of October 16, 2026, the tract-level list and map have not been published on a state website; the release says they will be available through the Alaska Business Initiative website, which had not posted them as of October 16.

Alaska census tracts list: Opportunity Zones by county

Every Alaska census tract that is either on the OZ 2.0 eligibility list (33 tracts, Treasury's Sep 23, 2026 eligible-tract data) or inside a current (2018) Opportunity Zone, grouped by county. The CDFI Fund's 2018 list has 25 Alaska tracts, numbered by the 2010 census. GEOIDs here are 2020-census tracts, so we matched the 2018 zones to 2020 tracts with the Census relationship file: they cover 26 2020 tracts fully and 2 partly (28 in this table). "Partly" means only part of the 2020 tract was in a 2018 zone (how we match).

Eligible doesn't mean certified. The governor can nominate up to 25 of these tracts (the 25% cap). The federal nomination window closed September 28, 2026, and certified OZ 2.0 zones take effect January 1, 2027. See which states have filed on the OZ 2.0 nomination tracker, check exact boundaries on the eligible-tract map, and read how to plan an OZ investment for January 2027.

Alaska Opportunity Zones 2.0: FAQ

How many Opportunity Zone 2.0 tracts has Alaska nominated?

Alaska nominated 25 census tracts, according to DCCED press release, Oct 14, 2026 (Alexandra Vrabec, PIO), reproduced in full by Alaska Native News (October 14, 2026).

How many census tracts in Alaska are eligible for Opportunity Zone 2.0?

33 tracts, 21 rural (eligible), per Treasury's September 2026 eligibility data (the original IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-14 appendix listed 32). Eligibility is set by federal low-income criteria; only nominated and certified tracts become Opportunity Zones. We use Treasury's current count, so the cap is computed from 33.

How many tracts can Alaska nominate?

Up to 25. Under Rev. Proc. 2026-14 the cap is states with fewer than 100 eligible tracts may nominate 25 (all tracts if fewer than 25).

Who chooses Alaska's Opportunity Zones?

The governor nominates tracts to the U.S. Treasury, which certifies them. In Alaska, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) runs the state process.

Are Alaska's nominated tracts official Opportunity Zones yet?

Not yet. Treasury must certify them. Under Rev. Proc. 2026-14, its consideration period ends by November 27, 2026 at the latest (extendable to December 28, 2026 at the state's request), and zones take effect January 1, 2027.

When was Alaska's community nomination deadline?

Alaska's published community/local input deadline was April 1–30, 2026 (statewide comment period). That is the state's internal window, separate from the federal deadline.

Do rural Opportunity Zones in Alaska get a bigger tax break?

Yes. Under OZ 2.0, gains invested in a qualified rural opportunity fund get a 30% basis step-up after five years instead of 10%, per IRS Notice 2026-55. Alaska has 21 rural eligible tracts, per Treasury's September 2026 eligibility data.
